Every wedding photographer promises to be “unobtrusive.” We actually are. You won't notice us until you see the photographs.
Lily is a childhood friend. She trusted me with the day before she’d seen a single frame.
We approach a wedding day the same way we approach any documentary shoot: arrive early, learn the room, stop looking for the moment the couple is performing and start watching everyone else. The grandmother who keeps straightening her hat. The three-year-old who grabs the groom's hand because she doesn't want to be left out. The older guests laughing at something only they can hear, backed against a stone wall. A minute of confetti lasts sixty seconds. The photographs last the rest of it.
While everyone watched the couple, we watched everyone else.
The best photographs from a wedding day are almost never of the couple alone. They're the father holding two small children. The guests who've been married forty years. The bridesmaid who can't keep it together. We move toward those moments, not away from them. That's the part of the day the couple doesn't see, and the part they'll want to.
