The Wedding That Changed How I Photograph
Some projects stay with you long after they're finished. This was one of them.
01The honour
When one of my oldest friends asked me to photograph her wedding, I felt incredibly honoured.
We’d grown up together, and being trusted to document one of the most important days of her life carried a weight that I didn’t take lightly. Alongside the excitement came a fair amount of nerves. There are moments you only get one chance to capture.
02Honest, not posed
I wasn’t interested in creating perfectly posed photographs, or directing every moment.
Instead, I wanted the images to feel honest — to reflect who they really are, rather than how a wedding is expected to look. Throughout the day, I found myself watching the quieter moments just as closely as the obvious ones. A reassuring glance between family members. Laughter shared between lifelong friends. The way two people naturally reached for each other’s hand without thinking. Those fleeting moments often tell the story of a wedding far better than any carefully arranged portrait.

03Everyone else
The same approach shaped the way I photographed their guests.
Weddings aren’t only about the couple; they’re about the people who have helped shape their lives. Capturing those genuine interactions felt just as important as documenting the ceremony itself.
When Lily received her photographs, her response meant more to me than anything else. Knowing she felt the images reflected the day as it truly happened — and leaving me a heartfelt testimonial afterwards — was the greatest compliment I could have received.
Looking back through the gallery now, what stays with me isn’t the perfectly lit shot.
It’s the moment just before someone remembered the camera was there.
That experience quietly changed the way I approach photography. Since then, I’ve cared less about creating perfect images and more about preserving authentic moments. Because years from now, it’s often the feeling behind a photograph — not its perfection — that brings us back to the people and memories that matter most.
